What happens to your possessions when you move into a care home

Different care homes have different policies about whether you can bring your things and your pets with you when you move in.

Your furniture and personal belongings

Some homes let you keep some of your own furniture and your other things, so find out exactly what the situation is before you move in.

It’s unlikely they’ll allow you to bring larger items of furniture into the home with you so your options for those items include selling them or giving them away to friends, family or a charity. Some people put their items onto storage if they really want to keep them. Another option is to ask your local council to take any bigger items away for you – some local authorities charge a small fee for this.

Pets

Some care homes allow residents to bring their pets with them when they move in. If your care home won’t allow for it, ask whether visitors are allowed to bring your pet to visit you.
